Pelvic Floor Muscle Assessment - EMG

The pelvic floor muscles are a layer of muscles located within the pelvis, responsible for urination and defecation. These muscles play a crucial role in the healthy filling and emptying of the bladder and bowels. Dysfunction in these muscles can lead to bladder and bowel problems in children. Therefore, their strength, flexibility, and function should be evaluated by pelvic floor physiotherapists. Surface EMG (electromyography) is often used to assess pelvic floor muscle activation. Surface EMG measures the electrical activity of muscles through electrodes placed on the skin, providing pelvic floor physiotherapists with information about muscle function without inserting any medical devices into the body. This assessment helps determine which exercises the child's muscle system needs.

The evaluation is painless and is described by many children as a fun experience.
