Uroflowmetry
Uroflowmetry, also known as a voiding test, is a quick and easy procedure used to evaluate your child's urine flow rate, flow pattern, duration of urination, and the volume of urine passed. This test, commonly used in pediatric urology, provides clinicians with information about bladder emptying. The test resembles a toilet, and no medical devices are inserted into the body during the procedure. Children do not experience any pain or discomfort during the test; in fact, many describe it as fun. It is recommended as a routine evaluation for children suspected of having bladder dysfunction.
How is the Uroflowmetry Test Performed?
Before the test, the child is asked to drink an amount of water appropriate for their expected bladder capacity. When the urge to urinate arises, the child is tested. During the test, the child sits on the toilet in a natural position and empties their bladder as they would at home. After the test, an ultrasound is performed to check for residual urine in the bladder. Any remaining urine is measured volumetrically via ultrasound and recorded. This completes the detailed evaluation of the child's bladder emptying phase.
