About Us
Urinary and fecal incontinence in children is a common health problem in childhood and is closely related to pediatric urology. Under normal circumstances, we expect children to achieve bowel control by age 4 and both daytime and nighttime urinary control by age 5. However, if a child still has difficulty controlling their bladder and bowels after age 5, they should definitely consult a pediatric urologist to investigate the underlying cause of the problem.
Although bladder and bowel problems in society are often considered psychological issues, it should be known that only 5% have psychological origins. The causes of urinary incontinence in children should not be forgotten, as they may result from serious kidney function losses or improper bladder function. Therefore, bladder and bowel problems should not be taken lightly and should be evaluated in detail by relevant healthcare professionals to create a treatment plan.
In bladder and bowel treatments, medication alone may sometimes be insufficient. Success rates in treatment increase with combined treatment approaches including pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation and urotherapy training. If there is a functional loss in the pelvic floor muscles that control urination and defecation, these muscles can be retrained by pelvic floor physiotherapists to function properly. At the same time, if functional loss is detected in the pelvic floor muscles involved in urinary and fecal control, incontinence in children can be prevented by developing retention maneuvers. Through pelvic floor rehabilitation, children's need for medication can be reduced while improving their bladder and bowel health. In this context, nocturnal enuresis and/or daytime urinary incontinence and constipation / fecal incontinence problems are conditions that require treatment with a wide range of options and should not be expected to resolve on their own. Treatment should be initiated without expecting children to cope with these problems alone.
